1988 Honda Accord DX Sedan

A20A1, there’s not much talk about this 100hp, 2.0L inline four cylinder online. But couple it to a 5-speed manual and it completes the 80’s era analog experience.

Carbureted, the single overhead cam doesn’t have any VTEC superpowers, redline is a modest 6,250rpm. But with simplicity comes reliability. This thirty-two year old, 200,000 mile unit is still pulling strong.

We found this particular Accord in California. A rare one-owner, unmodified gem.

With the help of local tuning shop, Deft Motion Our aim for it is to improve it’s handling characteristics as well as reliability. We want to keep things feeling factory but perhaps with a little more Type-R inspired performance.

This Accord DX Sedan is without power windows, power locks, or heated seats. Pretty much every option box left un-ticked. In the aim of longevity we admire this trim, fewer things to wrong.

It’s easy to dig into the Spoon catalog and day dream about an all out cash dumping build. Maybe one day the stars will align. But for now the goal is to keep this Accord’s factory heart beating strong. Getting it dialed in on the street before the next season of track days.

This humble Honda has come this far with it’s factory engine, we’ll see how much it has left to prove.
